Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 23)

Latin.png Latin text

1  Prima sabbati. Psalmus David.
5  hic accipiet benedictionem a Domino, et misericordiam a Deo salutari suo.
6  Haec est generatio quaerentium eum, quaerentium faciem Dei Jacob.
7  Attollite portas, principes, vestras, et elevamini, portae aeternales,
et introibit rex gloriae.
8  Quis est iste rex gloriæ? Dominus fortis et potens, Dominus potens in praelio.
9  Attollite portas, principes, vestras, et elevamini, portae aeternales,
et introibit rex gloriae.
10  Quis est iste rex gloriae? Dominus virtutum ipse est rex gloriae.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

1  The earth is the Lord's, and all that therein is : the compass of the world, and they that
dwell therein.
2  For he hath founded it upon the seas : and prepared it upon the floods.
3  Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord : or who shall rise up in his holy place?
4  Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart : and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity,
nor sworn to deceive his neighbour.
5  He shall receive the blessing from the Lord : and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6  This is the generation of them that seek him : even of them that seek thy face, O Jacob.
7  Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors :
and the King of glory shall come in.
8  Who is the King of glory : it is the Lord strong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle.
9  Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors :
and the King of glory shall come in.
10  Who is the King of glory : even the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

Metrical 'Old Version' (John Hopkins)

English.png English text

1  The earth is all the Lord's, with all
Her store and furniture;
Yea, his is all the world, and all
That therein doth endure:

2  For he hath fastly founded it
Above the seas to stand,
And plac'd below the liquid floods,
To flow beneath the land.

3  Who is the man, O Lord, that shall
Ascend unto thy hill?
Or pass into thy holy place,
There to continue still?

4  E'en he whose hands and heart are pure,
Which nothing doth defile.
His soul not set on vanity,
And hath not sworn to guile:

5  Him that is such a one, the Lord
Most highly will regard,
And from his God and Saviour shall
Receive a just reward.

6  This is the generation of
Them that do seek his grace,
E'en them that with an upright heart,
O Jacob, seek thy face.

7  Ye gates and everlasting doors,
Lift up your heads on high:
Then shall the King of glorious state
Come in triumphantly.

8  Who is the King of glorious state?
The great and mighty Lord;
The mighty Lord in battle strong,
And trial of the sword.

9  Ye gates and everlasting doors,
Lift up your heads on high:
Then shall the King of glorious state
Come in triumphantly.

10  Who is the King of glorious state?
The Lord of hosts it is:
The kingdom and the royalty
Of glorious state is his.

Metrical 'New Version' (Tate/Brady)

English.png English text

1  This spacious earth is all the Lord's,
The Lord's her fulness is;
The world, and they that dwell therein,
By sov'reign right are his.

2  He fram'd and fix'd it on the seas,
And his Almighty hand
Upon inconstant floods has made
The stable fabrick stand.

3  But for himself this Lord of all
One chosen seat design'd;
O who shall to that sacred hill
Desir'd admittance find?

4  The man whose hands and heart are pure,
Whose thoughts from pride are free ;
Who honest poverty prefers
To gainful perjury.

5  This, this is he, on whom the Lord
Shall show'r his blessings down,
Whom God his saviour shall vouchsafe
With righteousness to crown.

6  Such is the race of saints, by whom
The sacred courts are trod;
And such the proselytes that seek
The face of Jacob's God.

7  Erect your heads, eternal gates,
Unfold to entertain
The King of glory; see, he comes
With his celestial train.

8  Who is this King of glory? who?
The Lord for strength renown'd;
In battle mighty, o'er his foes
Eternal victor crown'd.

9  Erect your heads, ye gates, unfold
In state to entertain
The King of glory; see, he comes
With all his shining train.

10  Who is this King of glory? who?
The Lord of hosts renown'd;
Of glory he alone is King,
Who is with glory crown'd.

Metrical version by James Merrick

English.png English text

Earth, big with empires, to thy reign
Submits, great God, its wide domain;
Whate'er this orb's vast bounds confine,
By just possession, Lord, is thine:

That orb amid the wat'ry waste
Thy hands, best Architect, have plac'd,
And bid th'unfathomable deep
Beneath its firm foundations sleep.

Lord, who shall to thy hill ascend?
Who suppliant at thine altars bend,
Then joyful find a sure abode,
And own the presence of his God?

Whose hands and heart from guilt are free,
Who ne'er to idols bow'd the knee,
Nor, studious of deceit, would try
By oaths to consecrate a lie.

On such th'Almighty from above
Shall heap the blessings of his love,
And, purg'd from sin's transmissive stain,
Admit them to his sacred fane.

Such only form the chosen choir,
Whose feet, with licens'd step, aspire
To visit Sion's blest abode;
Who seek the face of Jacob's God.

Lift, lift your heads, each hallow'd gate,
Aloft, with sudden spring, your weight,
Ye everlasting portals, rear;
Behold the King of glory near!

And who this King of glory? say,
That Lord who bears th'eternal sway,
Who, cloth'd with strength, to war descends,
And conquest on his sword attends.

Lift, lift your heads, each hallow'd gate,
Aloft, with sudden spring, your weight,
Ye everlasting portals, rear;
Behold the King of glory near!

And who this King of glory? say,
The God, whom Heav'n's high hosts obey:
In him that King of glory view,
And yield to him the homage due.

PART 1 (C. M.)
The earth for ever is the Lord's,
With Adam's numerous race;
He raised its arches o'er the floods,
And built it on the seas.

But who among the sons of men
May visit thine abode?
He that has hands from mischief clean,
Whose heart is right with God.

This is the man may rise and take
The blessings of his grace;
This is the lot of those that seek
The God of Jacob's face.

Now let our souls' immortal powers
To meet the Lord prepare,
Lift up their everlasting doors,
The King of glory's near.

The King of glory! who can tell
The wonders of his might?
He rules the nations; but to dwell
With saints is his delight.

PART 2 (L. M.)
This spacious earth is all the Lord's,
And men, and worms, and beasts, and birds:
He raised the building on the seas,
And gave it for their dwelling-place.

But there's a brighter world on high,
Thy palace, Lord, above the sky:
Who shall ascend that blest abode,
And dwell so near his Maker God?

He that abhors and fears to sin,
Whose heart is pure, whose hands are clean,
Him shall the Lord the Savior bless,
And clothe his soul with righteousness.

These are the men, the pious race,
That seek the God of Jacob's face:
These shall enjoy the blissful sight,
And dwell in everlasting light.

Rejoice, ye shining worlds on high,
Behold the King of glory nigh!
Who can this King of glory be?
The mighty Lord, the Savior's he.

Ye heav'nly gates, your leaves display,
To make the Lord the Savior way:
Laden with spoils from earth and hell,
The Conqueror comes with God to dwell.

Raised from the dead, he goes before;
He opens heaven's eternal door,
To give his saints a blest abode,
Near their Redeemer and their God.

La terre au Seigneur appartient,
Tout ce qu’en sa rondeur contient
Et ceux qui habitent en elle:
Sur mer fondement lui donna,
L’enrichit et l’environna
De mainte riviere tres belle.

Mais sa montagne est un sainct lieu,
Qui viendra donc au mont de Dieu?
Qui est-ce qui là tiendra place?
L’homme de mains et coeur lavé
En vanité non eslevé
Et qui n’a juré en fallace.

L’homme tel Dieu bénira:
Dieu son Sauveur le munira
De miséricorde et clémence.
Telle est la génération
Cherchant d’affection
O Dieu de Jacob, ta présence.

Haussez vos testes grands portaux,

Haussez vos testes grands portaux,
Huis eternels tenez-vous hauts
Si entrera le Roy de gloire.
Qui est ce Roy tant glorieux?
C’est le fort Dieu victorieux
C’est luy qui est le Roy de gloire.

German translation by Peter Rottländer

German.png German translation

Dem Herrn gehört die Erde,
Alles was ihr Rund enthält

Ewige Tore, haltet euch oben

Ewige Tore, haltet euch oben
Wenn der König des Ruhmes eintreten wird.
Wer ist dieser König so ruhmreich?
Es ist der starke, siegreiche Gott,
Er ist dieser König des Ruhmes.

Paraphrase by Harriet Auber, 1829

English.png English text

1. Wide ye heavenly gates unfold,
Closed no more by death and sin,
Lo! the conquering Lord behold!
Let the King of Glory in.
Hark, the angelic host enquire,
Who is He, the mighty King?
Hark again, the answering choir
Thus in strains of triumph sing:

2. He whose powerful arm alone,
On His foes destruction hurled;
He who hath the victory won,
He who saved a ruined world;
He who God's pure law fulfilled,
Jesus, the incarnate Word;
He whose truth with blood was sealed,
He is heaven's all-glorious Lord.

3. Who shall to this blest abode
Follow in the Savior's train?
They who in His cleansing blood
Wash away each guilty stain:
They whose daily actions prove
Steadfast faith and holy fear,
Fervent zeal and grateful love;
They shall dwell for ever here.

A szombat első napján.
Az ártatlan kezű s a tiszta szívű, ki lelkét nem adta hiúságra, sem álnoksággal nem esküdött felebarátjának;
