Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 131)

Latin.png Latin text

1  Canticum graduum. Memento, Domine, David, et omnis mansuetudinis ejus:
2  sicut juravit Domino; votum vovit Deo Jacob:
3  Si introiero in tabernaculum domus meae; si ascendero in lectum strati mei;
  donec inveniam locum Domino, tabernaculum Deo Jacob.
6  Ecce audivimus eam in Ephrata; invenimus eam in campis silvae.
7  Introibimus in tabernaculum ejus; adorabimus in loco ubi steterunt pedes ejus.
13  Quoniam elegit Dominus Sion: elegit eam in habitationem sibi.
14  Haec requies mea in saeculum saeculi; hic habitabo, quoniam elegi eam.
15  Viduam ejus benedicens benedicam; pauperes ejus saturabo panibus.
16  Sacerdotes ejus induam salutari, et sancti ejus exsultatione exsultabunt.
17  Illuc producam cornu David; paravi lucernam christo meo.
18  Inimicos ejus induam confusione; super ipsum autem efflorebit sanctificatio mea.

English.png English text

1  Lord, remember David: and all his trouble;
2  How he sware unto the Lord: and vowed a vow unto the Almighty God of Jacob;
3  I will not come within the tabernacle of mine house: nor climb up into my bed;
4  I will not suffer mine eyes to sleep, nor mine eye-lids to slumber:
  neither the temples of my head to take any rest;
5  Until I find out a place for the temple of the Lord: an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
6  Lo, we heard of the same at Ephrata: and found it in the wood.
7  We will go into his tabernacle: and fall low on our knees before his footstool.
8  Arise, O Lord, into thy resting-place: thou, and the ark of thy strength.
9  Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness: and let thy saints sing with joyfulness.
10  For thy servant David's sake: turn not away the presence of thine Anointed.
11  The Lord hath made a faithful oath unto David: and he shall not shrink from it;
12  Of the fruit of thy body: shall I set upon thy seat.
13  If thy children will keep my covenant, and my testimonies that I shall learn them:
their children also shall sit upon thy seat for evermore.
14  For the Lord hath chosen Sion to be an habitation for himself: he hath longed for her.
15  This shall be my rest for ever: here will I dwell, for I have a delight therein.
16  I will bless her victuals with increase: and will satisfy her poor with bread.
17  I will deck her priests with health: and her saints shall rejoice and sing.
18  There shall I make the horn of David to flourish: I have ordained a lantern for mine Anointed.
19  As for his enemies, I shall clothe them with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

English.png English text

Remember David's troubles, Lord,
How unto thee he swore,
And vow'd a vow to Jacob's God,
To keep for evermore;

I will not come within my house,
Nor climb up to my bed,
Nor let my temples take their rest,
Nor eyes within my head;

Till I have found out for the Lord
A place to sit thereon,
An house for Jacob's God to be
An habitation.

We heard of it at Ephrata,
Where did we hear this sound,
And in the fields and forests there
These voices first were found:

We will assay and go into
His tabernacle there,
Before his footstool to fall down,
And worship him in fear.

Arise, O Lord, arise, I pray,
Into thy resting place,
Thou and the ark of thy great strength,
The presence of thy grace.

Let all thy priests be clothed, Lord,
With truth and righteousness,
Let all thy saints with songs of praise
Their joyfulness express.

And for thy servant David's sake
Refuse not, Lord, I pray,
The face of thy Anointed, and
Turn not from him away.

The Second Part
The Lord to David sware in truth,
And will not shrink from it;
The fruit which from thy loins proceed
Upon thy seat shall sit:

And if thy sons my laws will keep,
That I shall learn each one,
Then shall their sons for ever sit
Upon thy princely throne.

The Lord himself hath Sion chose,
And loves therein to dwell,
Saying, This is my resting place,
I love and like it well;

And I will bless with great increase
Her victuals every where,
And also satisfy with bread
The needy that be there.

With my salvation I will clothe
Her priests for evermore,
And all her saints likewise shall sing
And shout for joy therefore.

There will I surely make the horn
Of David for to bud;
For there I have ordain'd for him
A lantern bright and good.

As for his foes, I will them clothe
With shame for evermore;
But I will cause his crown to shine
More fresh than heretofore.

Let David, Lord, a constant place
In thy remembrance find;
Let all the sorrows he endur'd
Be ever in thy mind.

Remember what a solemn oath
To thee, his Lord, he swore;
How to the mighty God he vow'd,
Whom Jacob's sons adore.

I will not go into my house,
Nor to my bed ascend;
No soft repose shall close my eyes,
Nor sleep my eyelids bend:

Till for the Lord's design'd abode
I mark the destin'd ground;
Till I a decent place of rest
For Jacob's God have found.

Th'appointed place with shouts of joy
At Ephrata we found,
And made the woods and neighb'ring fields
Our glad applause resound.

O with due rev'rence let us then
To his abode repair;
And, prostrate at his footstool fall'n,
Pour out our humble pray'r.

Arise, O Lord, and now possess
Thy constant place of rest;
Be that, not only with thy ark,
But with thy presence blest.

Clothe thou thy priests with righteousness,
Make thou thy saints rejoice;
And, for thy servant David's sake,
Hear thy anointed's voice.

God sware to David in his truth,
(Nor shall his oath be vain,)
One of thy offspring, after thee,
Upon thy throne shall reign.

And if thy seed my cov'nant keep,
And to my laws submit,
Their children too upon thy throne
For evermore shall sit.

For Sion does in God's esteem
All other seats excel;
His place of everlasting rest,
Where he desires to dwell

Her store, says he, I will increase,
Her poor with plenty bless;
Her saints shall shout for joy, her priests
My saving health confess.

There David's pow'r shall long remain
In his successive line,
And my anointed servant there
Shall with fresh lustre shine.

The faces of his vanquish'd foes
Confusion shall o'erspread,
Whilst, with confirm'd success, his crown
Shall flourish on his head.

Ének a fölmenetekre.
Nem megyek be házam hajlékába, nem hágok föl nyoszolyám ágyára;
Özvegyeit áldva áldom meg, és szegényeit megelégítem kenyérrel;

1  A gradual canticle. O Lord, remember David, and all his meekness.
2  How he swore to the Lord, he vowed a vow to the God of Jacob:
3  If I shall enter into the tabernacle of my house: if I shall go up into the bed wherein I lie:
4  If I shall give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,
5  Or rest to my temples: until I find out a place for the Lord, a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
6  Behold we have heard of it in Ephrata: we have found it in the fields of the wood.
7  We will go into his tabernacle: we will adore in the place where his feet stood.
8  Arise, O Lord, into thy resting place: thou and the ark, which thou hast sanctified.
9  Let thy priests be clothed with justice: and let thy saints rejoice.
10  For thy servant David's sake, turn not away the face of thy anointed.
11  The Lord hath sworn truth to David, and he will not make it void: of the fruit of thy womb I will set upon thy throne.
12  If thy children will keep my covenant, and these my testimonies which I shall teach them: Their children also for evermore shall sit upon thy throne.
13  For the Lord hath chosen Sion: he hath chosen it for his dwelling.
14  This is my rest for ever and ever: here will I dwell, for I have chosen it.
15  Blessing I will bless her widow: I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16  I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints shall rejoice with exceeding great joy.
17  There will I bring forth a horn to David: I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.
18  His enemies I will clothe with confusion: but upon him shall my sanctification flourish.

Metrical paraphrases by Isaac Watts, 1719

PART 1. (L. M.)
At the settlement of a church, or
the ordination of a minister

Where shall we go to seek and find
An habitation for our God,
A dwelling for th' Eternal Mind,
Among the sons of flesh and blood?

The God of Jacob chose the hill
Of Zion for his ancient rest;
And Zion is his dwelling still,
His church is with his presence blessed.

Here will I fix my gracious throne,
And reign for ever, saith the Lord;
Here shall my power and love be known,
And blessings shall attend my word.

Here will I meet the hungry poor,
And fill their souls with living bread;
Sinners that wait before my door
With sweet provision shall be fed.

Girded with truth, and clothed with grace,
My priests, my ministers, shall shine
Not Aaron in his costly dress
Made an appearance so divine.

The saints, unable to contain
Their inward joys, shall shout and sing;
The Son of David here shall reign,
And Zion triumph in her King.

Jesus shall see a num'rous seed
Born here t' uphold his glorious name;
His crown shall flourish on his head,
While all his foes are clothed with shame.

PART 2. vv. 4,5,7,8,15-17 (C. M.)
A church established

No sleep nor slumber to his eyes
Good David would afford,
Till he had found below the skies
A dwelling for the Lord.

The Lord in Zion placed his name,
His ark was settled there;
To Zion the whole nation came
To worship thrice a year.

But we have no such lengths to go,
Nor wander far abroad;
Where'er thy saints assemble now,
There is a house for God.

Arise, O King of grace, arise,
And enter to thy rest!
Lo! thy church waits with longing eyes
Thus to be owned and blessed.

Enter with all thy glorious train,
Thy Spirit and thy word;
All that the ark did once contain
Could no such grace afford.

Here, mighty God, accept our vows,
Here let thy praise be spread;
Bless the provisions of thy house,
And fill thy poor with bread.

Here let the Son of David reign,
Let God's Anointed shine;
Justice and truth his court maintain
With love and power divine.

Here let him hold a lasting throne;
And as his kingdom grows,
Fresh honors shall adorn his crown,
And shame confound his foes.
