Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 59)

5  Ostendisti populo tuo dura; potasti nos vino compunctionis.
6  Dedisti metuentibus te significationem, ut fugiant a facie arcus;
  ut liberentur dilecti tui.
7  Salvum fac dextera tua, et exaudi me.
Juda rex meus;
10  Moab olla spei meae. In Idumaeam extendam calceamentum meum: mihi alienigenae subditi sunt.
11  Quis deducet me in civitatem munitam? quis deducet me usque in Idumaeam?

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

  Unto the end, for them that shall be changed, for the inscription of a title, to David himself, for doctrine,
  When he set fire to Mesopotamia of Syria and Sobal: and Joab returned and slew of Edom, in the vale of the saltpits, twelve thousand men.
1  O God, thou hast cast us out, and scattered us abroad: thou hast also been displeased;
O turn thee unto us again.
2  Thou hast moved the land, and divided it: heal the sores thereof, for it shaketh.
3  Thou hast shewed thy people heavy things: thou hast given us a drink of deadly wine.
4  Thou hast given a token for such as fear thee: that they may triumph because of the truth.
5  Therefore were thy beloved delivered:
  help me with thy right hand, and hear me.
6  God hath spoken in his holiness, I will rejoice, and divide Sichem: and mete out the valley of Succoth.
7  Gilead is mine, and Manasses is mine: Ephraim also is the strength of my head;
Judah is my law-giver;
8  Moab is my wash-pot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, be thou glad of me.
9  Who will lead me into the strong city: who will bring me into Edom?
10  Hast not thou cast us out, O God: wilt not thou, O God, go out with our hosts?
11  O be thou our help in trouble: for vain is the help of man.
12  Through God will we do great acts: for it is he that shall tread down our enemies.

Káldi fordítás (59. zsoltár)

Kemény dolgokat mutattál a te népednek; a keserűség borával itattál minket.

Metrical Paraphrase by Joel Barlow

Looking to God in the distress of war
English.png English text

1. Lord, thou hast scourged our guilty land.
Behold, thy people mourn;
Shall vengeance ever guide thy hand,
And mercy ne'er return ?

2. Beneath the terrors of thine eye,
Earth's haughty towers decay;
Thy frowning mantle spreads the sky
And mortals melt away.

3. Our Zion trembles at thy stroke,
And dreads thy lifted hand!
Oh, heal the people thou hast broke,
And save the sinking land.

4. Exalt thy banner in the field,
For those that fear thy name;
From barbarous hosts our nation shield,
And put our foes to shame.

5. Attend our armies to the fight,
And be their guardian God;
In vain shall numerous powers unite
Against thy lifted rod.

6. Our troops beneath thy guiding hand,
Shall gain a glad renown:
'Tis God who makes the feeble stand,
And treads the mighty down.
