Clementine Vulgate (psalm 16)Latin text Oratio David 1 Exaudi, Domine, justitiam meam; intende deprecationem meam. Auribus percipe orationem meam, non in labiis dolosis. 2 De vultu tuo judicium meum prodeat; oculi tui videant aequitates. 3 Probasti cor meum, et visitasti nocte; igne me examinasti, et non est inventa in me iniquitas. 4 Utnon loquatur os meum opera hominum: propter verba labiorum tuorum, ego custodivi vias duras. 6 Ego clamavi, quoniam exaudisti me, Deus; inclina aurem tuam mihi, et exaudi verba mea. 7 Mirifica misericordias tuas, qui salvos facis sperantes in te. 8 A resistentibus dexterae tuae custodi me ut pupillam oculi. Sub umbra alarum tuarum protege me 9 a facie impiorum qui me afflixerunt. Inimici mei animam meam circumdederunt; 10 adipem suum concluserunt: os eorum locutum est superbiam. 11 Projicientes me nunc circumdederunt me; oculos suos statuerunt declinare in terram. |
Church of England 1662 Book of Common PrayerEnglish text 1 Hear the right, O Lord, consider my complaint : and hearken unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips. 2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence : and let thine eyes look upon the thing that is equal. 3 Thou hast proved and visited mine heart in the night-season; thou hast tried me, and shalt find no wickedness in me; for I am utterly purposed that my mouth shall not offend. 4 Because of men's works, that are done against the words of thy lips : I have kept me from the ways of the destroyer. 5 O hold thou up my goings in thy paths : that my footsteps slip not. 6 I have called upon thee, O God, for thou shalt hear me : incline thine ear to me, and hearken unto my words. 7 Shew thy marvellous loving-kindness, thou that art the Saviour of them which put their trust in thee : from such as resist thy right hand. 8 Keep me as the apple of an eye : hide me under the shadow of thy wings. 9 From the ungodly that trouble me : mine enemies compass me round about to take away my soul. 10 They are inclosed in their own fat : and their mouth speaketh proud things. 11 They lie waiting in our way on every side : turning their eyes down to the ground. 12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey : and as it were a lion's whelp, lurking in secret places. 13 Up, Lord, disappoint him, and cast him down : deliver my soul from the ungodly, which is a sword of thine; 14 From the men of thy hand, O Lord, from the men, I say, and from the evil world : which have their portion in this life, whose bellies thou fillest with thy hid treasure. 15 They have children at their desire : and leave the rest of their substance for their babes. 16 But as for me, I will behold thy presence in righteousness : and when I awake up after thy likeness, I shall be satisfied with it. |

English text
1 Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.
2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.
3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
5 Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.
6 I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.
7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.
10 They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;
12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
13 Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:
14 From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Metrical 'New Version' (Tate/Brady)
English text
To my just plea and sad complaint,
Attend, O righteous Lord,
And to my pray'r, as 'tis unfeign'd,
A gracious ear afford.
As in thy sight I am approv'd,
So let my sentence be;
And with impartial eyes, O Lord,
My upright dealing see.
For thou hast search'd my heart by day,
And visited by night;
And on the strictest trial found
Its secret motions right.
Nor shall thy justice, Lord, alone
My heart's designs acquit;
For I have purpos'd that my tongue
Shall no offence commit.
I know what wicked men would do
Their safety to maintain;
But me thy just and mild commands
From bloody paths restrain.
That I may still, in spite of wrongs,
My innocence secure;
O guide me in thy righteous ways,
And make my footsteps sure.
Since heretofore I ne'er in vain
To thee my pray'r address'd;
O now, my God, incline thine ear
To this my just request.
The wonders of thy truth and love
In my defence engage;
Thou, whose right hand preserves thy saints
From their oppressors' rage.
The Second Part
O! keep me in thy tend'rest care;
Thy shelt'ring wings stretch out,
To guard me safe from savage foes,
That compass me about.
O'ergrown with luxury, inclosed
In their own fat they lie;
And with a proud blaspheming mouth
Both God and man defy.
Well may they boast, for they have now
My paths encompass'd round;
Their eyes at watch, their bodies bow'd,
And crouching on the ground,
In posture of a lion set,
When greedy of his prey;
Or a young lion, when he lurks
Within a covert way.
Arise, O Lord, defeat their plots,
Their swelling rage control;
From wicked men, who are thy sword,
Deliver thou my soul:
From worldly men, thy sharpest scourge,
Whose portion's here below;
Who, fill'd with earthly stores, desire
No other bliss to know.
Their race is num'rous that partake
Their substance while they live:
Their heirs survive, to whom they may
The vast remainder give.
But I, in uprightness, thy face
Shall view without control;
And, waking, shall its image find
Reflected in my soul.

Megvetvén engem, most körűlvettek; elvégezték, hogy szemeiket földre sütik;
a te kezed ellenségeitől. Uram! a kevesektől a földön válaszd el őket életökben. Elrejtett kincseiddel betelt hasok; bővelkednek magzatokkal, s a mijök fennmarad, kisdedeiknek hagyják.
