General Information

The text of Miserere mei, Deus is the older Latin Vulgate translation of Psalm 50 (according to the numbering of the Latin Bible) or 51 (according to the numbering of the Hebrew Bible). The psalm is part of the traditional 7 penitential psalms, ie 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143 (or 6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, and 142 in the Septuagint numbering). Psalm 51 is usually referred to as the Miserere, after its Latin incipit. See also O Herre Gott begnade mich and Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott for German chorales based on this psalm.

Liturgical use: Final psalm sung at service of tenebrae. The doxology (Gloria Patri, etc.) is not part of the psalm proper but may be included in some musical settings.

4  Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me.

6  Tibi soli peccavi, et malum coram te feci; ut justificeris

1  Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness: according to the multitude
of thy mercies do away mine offences.
2  Wash me throughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.
3  For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me.
4  Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified
in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged.
5  Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me.
6  But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.
