A Responsory is a form of Gregorian chant associated with the lessons of the Liturgy of the Hours. It differs from the antiphon (associated with psalmody) in that only the second half of the respond is repeated as a refrain after the verses.

The most famous responsories are those of of tenebrae, set by Lassus, Gesualdo and others, and those of the Office of the Dead, which often conclude settings of the Requiem. Some propers of the mass originated as responsories, even though the the form is no longer easily recognizable. Thus one still sees graduals labled responsorium.
