Madonna al dolce riso
M’apre tra le viole il paradiso,
E con la dolc’angelic’armonia
A se tutto m’invia,
E l’alma dal mio cor part’e recide..

Poi, del mio stato accorta,
Forse alla faccia sbigottita e smorta
La rende, dove in me pace non have.
O pietà cruda e grave,
O dolcezza infinita,
Che mal mio grado mi ritorna in vita;

Dann, meines Zustands bewusst werdend,
O grausameund schwere Gnade,
o unendliche Süße,
die mich gegen meinen Willen ins Leben zurückbringt;
aber wenn sie sanft spricht oder lacht,
tötet mich Amor süß tausendfach.

My lady by her sweet smile
opens paradise for me among the violets,
and with sweet angelic harmony
directs me completely to her,
and the soul separates and cuts itself from my heart.

Then, becoming aware of my state,
perhaps to the frightened and bleakened face
she gives it back, for she has no peace within me.
O cruel and grave pity,
o endless sweetness,
that returns me to life against my will;
but when she softly speaks or laughs, then,
Love kilss me a thousand times.
