Ecco l‘aurora con l‘aurata fronte,
Ch‘a passo passo ci rimena il giorno;
Ecco che spunta sopra l’orizonte
Col volto suo di bianca neve adorno;
Ecco la notte ne l’adverso monte,
Che va fuggendo al suo antico soggiorno:
Et io pur piango all’ apparir de l’alba,
c’homai d’intorno l’aere tutto inalba.
English translation
Behold Aurora with her gilded brow,
that step by step brings us back the day;
behold her peering over the horizon,
her face adorned with white snow;
see the night on the opposite mountain
that is fleeing to her ancient abode:
yet I weep at the appearance of dawn,
which now lightens the air all around.
Siehe die Morgenröte mit vergoldeter Stirn,
die Schritt für Schritt uns den Tag zurückbringt;
siehe, wie sie über den Horizont heraustritt
mit ihrem von weißem Schnee geschmückten Gesicht;
Sieh die Nacht auf dem gegenüberliegenden Berg,
die sich zurückzieht zu ihrem alten Aufenthalt:
