Biography

Charles Wenham Smith was born in England and trained at New College, Oxford. He was organist at St George's Cathedral, SouthwarkLink to the English Wikipedia article, professor of music at St. Joseph’s College, Clapham, London, and sub-conductor at the Gaiety Theatre, London. At about age 30, he immigrated to the United States, settling in Newark, New Jersey. For three decades, he served as organist at the First Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth, New Jersey, and at Temple B’nai Jeshurun, Newark. He was a founding member of the of the American Guild of Organists and member of the New York Manuscript Society. He died in Newark. His compositions are mostly church music and organ and piano pieces.
