Con pietà vi rimiro,
Pallidette viole,
Pur dianzi rugiadose, hor arse al Sole:
Al Sol, ch’affretta il giro,
Forse per non udir vostro martiro.
Ben à voi mi pareggio
Dal lagrimar hor vinto,
Hor da l’ardor di cruda stella estinto:
E se pietà le chieggio;
Vola, ch’à pena col pensier la veggio.

German translation

Mit Gram betrachte ich euch,
verblichene Veilchen,
soeben noch vom Tau benetzt, nun von der Sonne verbrannt:
der Sonne, die ihren Lauf beschleunigt,
vielleicht, um euer Leid nicht anzuhören.
Wohl verleiche ich mich mit euch,
einmal vom Weinen überwältigt,
mal von der Hitze des grausamen Sterns ausgelöscht;
und wenn sie um Erbarmen bitte,
fliegt sie davon, so dass kaum noch in Gedanken ich sie sehe.

English translation

With pity I behold you,
faded violets,
only lately dew-moisted, now sun-burnt:
by the sun that hastens her course,
perhaps not to hear your martyrdom.
Well I compare myself to you,
now vanquished by weeping,
now extinguished by the heat of the cruel star;
and if I ask her for pity,
she flies away, that even in thought I hardly can see it.
