Description: A carol setting by Joseph Stephenson. Hymn Tune Index tune number 3537. The text of the carol is based on a 'Hymn for Christmas-Day' published on pp. 516-517 of the Gentleman's Magazine for November 1748 (Vol. 18, No. 11), with the attribution 'The Words by Mr OATS … of Devonshire'. Verses 1 and 2 of the text given by Stephenson are similar to the corresponding verses in the Gentleman's Magazine text (which has five verses in total). Stephenson's verse 3 is not derived from any of the Gentleman's Magazine verses.
