General Information

Title: Missa Du Bon Du Cuer
Composer: Noel Bauldeweyn
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: SSTTB
Genre: SacredMass

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: ca. 1529
Description: Published anonymously in BSB Mus.ms. 6, an Alamire choirbook from ca. 1508-1530, but supposedly by Bauldeweyn. In the Agnus Dei something strange happens in the tenor part: from bar 18 black notation (meaning triple time) and white notation are swapped. Musicologist Joep van Buchem explained: in BSB mus.ms. 5 the tenor part has this cryptic description: "Noctem verterunt in diem et rursum post tenebras spero lucem", which is from Job 17:12. It means: “They have turned night into day, and after darkness I hope for light again.” This inspired the composer (or the scribe) to symbolically swap black and white notation. Ms. 6 lacks this information.
