Title: Magnificat and Nunc dimittis "to Mr Parsley's Service"
Composer: Christopher Tye
Manuscript Peterhouse, Cambridge MSS 34, 36, 37, 42, 43, 44 (Peterhouse Partbooks)
Description: The attribution of this setting in one source as "Mr Parsley's Evening Service" has lead some to ascribe it to Osbert Parsley. The description in another source, "Dr Tye's Magnificat and Nunc dimittis to Mr Parsley's Service", offers a more likely explanation: these evening canticles were written by Christopher Tye, to partner Parsley's morning canticles. It may be noted that the Gloria of the Nunc dimittis is the same as that of Parsley's Benedictus. Tudway dates this service to 1545. That date seems unfeasibly early for an English language canticle. The designation "in G minor" in some sources appears to be an 18th Century anachronism.
