English text
How sweet the news the robins bring,
As through the air they’re flying;
How sweet the melodies they sing,
To echoes soft replying;
They tell of skies so bright and blue,
Of verdant fields and bowers,
They warble of the bliss they knew,
In groves of orange flowers.
The woods adorn themselves anew,
In vernal robes appearing;
And blossoms lift their cups of dew,
Where skies are bright and cheering;
The streamlet flowing calm and clear,
Its own sweet song is singing,
But pauses now and then to hear,
The news the birds are bringing.
When spring her icy fetter breaks,
The wood and vale adorning,
Each bud and blossom she awakes,
To hail the fragrant morning;
When to their nests the robin fly,
For summer treasure yearning,
All nature whispers—“Spring is nigh!”—
And hails the birds returning.
