English text
How oft, when the lengthening shades of night
Do close the day’s bright eye;
How oft, when the twilight’s mellow glow
Sheds rest and beauty far and nigh;
The lengthening shades, the twilight’s glow
That spreads o’er land and sky,
How oft doth their peaceful charms so pure
Draw from some heart a sigh.
A sigh for the golden days of yore,
When life was one sweet song;
A sigh for the memories full of joy,
That now have vanished, oh, so long;
The golden days, the memories sweet,
Once more shall breathe again,
And oft shall the soothing sigh of peace
Be then the calm refrain.
