When daisies pied and violets blue
And ladysmocks all silverwhite
And cuckoobuds of yellow hue
Do paint the meadows with delight,

The cuckoo then on ev’ry tree
Mocks married men, for thus sings he,
Cuckoo--O word of fear,
O word unpleasing to a married ear!

When shepherds pipe on oaten straws
And merry larks are ploughman’s clocks,
When turtles tread and rooks and daws
And maidens bleach their summer smocks,

The cuckoo then on ev’ry tree
Mocks married men, for thus sings he,
Cuckoo--O word of fear,
O word unpleasing to a married ear!

Wenn bunte Tausendschön
und blaue Veilchen und silbrig-weißes
Wiesenschaumkraut und Himmelsschlüssel
von gelbem Ton die Wiesen farbenfreudig zieren,
dann verspottet der Kuckuck auf jedem Baum
die verheirateten Männer; denn er singt
Kuckuck--Oh Schreckenswort,
dem Ohr des Ehemanns ein Graus!

Wenn die Schäfer auf Haferhalmen blasen
und die lustigen Lerchen den Pflügern als
Uhr dienen, wenn sich die Tauben paaren
und die Saatkrähen und die Dohlen und
die Mädchen ihre Sommerhemdchen bleichen,
dann verspottet der Kuckuck auf jedem Baum
die verheirateten Männer; denn er singt
