Background
- Not to be confused with Gallican chant, a precursor of Gregorian chant.
Galician chant (Ukrainian: галицький розспів) is a polyphonic singing tradition (also called samoyilka, samoylivka or yerusalymka) used in the Greek-Catholic and Orthodox Church mainly in Western Ukraine (note that the term "Galician" here refers to the Ukrainian region "Halychyna", not to the Spanish "Galicia"). Like in Kievan or Znamenny chant, Galician chant uses the system consisting of Eight Modes (intonation structures).
