General information
The tune known as Surrey is by Henry Carey. It was first published in 1723, in John Church's An Introduction to Psalmody, as a setting of Joseph Addison's paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord my pasture shall prepare. The tune was given the name 'Surrey' in 1790, in Edward Miller's The Psalms of David. Other names used for the tune include Addison's, Carey's, Yarmouth and Cumberland. The tune is listed in the Hymn Tune Index under tune number 1034 (variants a-h).
