Italian text Se l'ardor foss’ equale Ben posto saria amor in donna tale Ma io peno per voi e voi godete Dell’aspra pena mia Et s’io ve’l dico voi non lo credete Né so quel che mi far per v’aggradire Non mi val ben servir con pura fede Che l’alterezza vostra a nulla cede Ma vi vo’ dir la chiara mente mia Se voi farete che l’amor sia equale Dirò ch’amor sta ben in donna tale.

English translation If the ardour were equal Love would be well-placed in such a lady But I suffer for you and you enjoy My harsh suffering. And if I say it you do not believe it Nor do I know what to do to please you, I do not want to serve with pure loyalty For your pride succumbs to nothing. But I will speak my mind clearly: If you ensure that love is equal I will say that love is well-placed in such a lady.
