Both parts
- Editor: Mick Swithinbank (submitted 2020-06-27). Score information: A4, 12 pages, 112 kB Copyright: CPDL
- Edition notes: At bar 69, ficta B flats are shown, to avoid a melodic augmented fourth in the Cantus part. This was probably (as shown in the Art Levine edition of 'Quanti mercenarii' and heard on the recording by the Brabant Ensemble) intended to initiate a chain reaction of ficta adjustments which would ultimately cause the entire final part of the score to move to a pitch a semitone lower than the work's starting point. The present edition instead tolerates two melodic augmented fourth intervals, thus maintaining the initial pitch standard. The gorgeous harmonic effects at ‘et dicam ei’, in particular, are unaffected by this. Singers may choose between inconveniences: either requiring Altus and Tenor to sing one augmented interval each (Swithinbank edition) or requiring the whole ensemble to read the later part of the score in seven flats. In the latter case, the Art Levine edition, which is of Part Two only, should be used for that part, making due allowance for the editorial halving of note values there.
