Latin text O quam inanes gressus nostri Qui labimur in vanitates & impios amores! Quid titubamus caeci & perdimus aeterna Ut terrestria bona fluxa retineamus? Insani sumus & similes ferarum Ni nascimur in vitam sempiternam. Italian text O come vaneggiate donna Pensand’ havermi tolto il core Con torme il vostr’ amore. Chi non ha core è morto Et io son accorto D’esser tanto più vivo Quando di voi son privo. Anzi ero morto e quando vi lasciai Rinacqui sì ch’io non morrò più mai.

English translation Oh, how empty our steps If we descend into vanity and love the wicked! If we stumble blindly And lose the eternal for a transient hold on earthly goods? we are insane And no better than animals If we are not born to eternal life.
