Biography
Maurice Arnold Strothotte was born in St. Louis, Missouri, later shortening his name to Maurice Arnold. He received his first instruction from his pianist mother, and then attended the Cincinnati College of Music. After studying in Germany, he returned to St. Louis, where he established himself as teacher, violinist and conductor of light opera. He drew the interest of Antonín Dvořák and became one of Dvořák’s any African-American students at the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York. He remained in New York as a Conservatory instructor, with two seasons in London and Germany. He died in New York City. His compositions include comic operas, a grand opera, a cantata, a symphony, assorted symphonic and instrumental works, piano pieces, and songs.
