Biography
Louis Victor Saar was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and was educated in Strassburg. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Munich with additional studies in Vienna, Leipzig, and Berlin. He also studied with Johannes Brahms. In 1894 he immigrated to New York and became an accompanist at the Metropolitan Opera. He taught harmony and counterpoint at the National Conservatory and at the New York College of Music, Institute of Musical Art of New York. He then was head of the Department of Theory and Composition at the College of Music of Cincinnati. He later joined the faculty of the Chicago Musical College and finally joined the faculty of the St. Louis Institute of Music. He died in St. Louis, Missouri. He composed orchestral pieces, chamber works, choral works, songs, and violin and piano pieces.
