Karaṇīyam-attha-kusalena, yantaṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca,
This should be done by one skilled in goodness, one who seeks the path of peace:

Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, suvaco cassa mudu anatimānī,
They should be able, upright and straightforward, kindly of speech, and gentle, without pride,

Santussako ca, subharo ca, appakicco ca, sallahuka-vutti,
Well content and easily supported, having few duties and frugal in their ways.

Santindriyo ca, nipako ca, appagabbho, kulesu ananugiddho.
Senses calmed, intelligent and modest; when with others there would be no greed.

Na ca khuddaṃ samācare kiñci, yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ.
They should not pursue the slightest thing that other wise people might speak against.

Sukhino vā khemino hontu, sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
May all beings, in gladness and in safety, may they all be happy in themselves.

Ye keci pāṇa-bhūtatthi, tasā vā, thāvarā vā, anavasesā,
Whatsoever living beings there are, weak or strong, omitting none,

Dīghā vā ye mahantā vā, majjhimā rassakā aṇuka-thūlā,
Be they long or medium-sized or great, short or tiny or massive of form,

Diṭṭhā vā ye ca adiṭṭhā, ye ca dūre vasanti avidūre,
Either seen or unseen beings, dwelling far away or near,

Bhūtā vā, sambhavesī vā, sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
Those now alive or yet to be born, may all beings be happy in themselves.

Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha, nātimaññetha katthaci naṃ kiñci,
Let no being deceive another, scorning none in any way.

Vyārosanā paṭīgha-saññā, nāññam-aññassa dukkham-iccheyya.
May one wish no harm to another; having no anger or ill-will.

Mātā yathā niyaṃ puttaṃ, āyusā eka-puttam-anurakkhe,
Just as a mother watches with her life over her child, her only child,

Evam-pi sabba-bhūtesu, māna-sambhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.
So should one cultivate a mind boundless, cherishing all that lives in the world.

Mettañca sabba-lokasmiṃ, māna-sambhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ,
Radiate kindness over the world, with a mind unbounded and sublime,

Uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañca, asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ.
Upwards, downwards, and all around, freed from hatred and ill-will.

Tiṭṭhañ’caraṃ nisinno vā, sayāno vā, yāvatassa vigatam-iddho,
Whether standing, walking or sitting or lying down while not asleep,

Etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya. Brahmam-etaṃ vihāraṃ idham-āhu.
One should sustain this rmindfulness, said to be the abiding sublime.

Diṭṭhiñca anupagamma, sīlavā dassanena sampanno,
By not holding on to fixed views, virtuous, endowed with insight clear,

Kāmesu vineyya gedhaṃ, Na hi jātu gabbha-seyyaṃ punaretīti.
Being freed from sense-desire, one is not born again into this world.
