Description: In te Domine speravi, per trovar pietà is a frottola found in many old manuscripts, often times attributed to "Josquin d'Ascanio", who today is believed to be des Prez' nickname during the time he was in the service of Cardinal Ascanio. Josquin also published a Latin-only contrafactum for this same work under the title In te, Domine, speravi, non confundar. It is sometimes told that the Latin-Italian version is actually a cynical reminder to the Cardinal of a retarded payment for Josquin's services (though similar stories exist about other compositions of Josquin), while the Latin-only version is a later adaptation to be used in church services.

Latin and Italian text In te Domine speravi Per trovar pietà in eterno. Ma in un tristo e obscuro inferno Fui et frustra laboravi. Rotto e al vento ogni speranza Veggio il ciel voltarmi in pianto. Suspir lacrime m'avanza Del mio tristo sperar tanto. Fui ferito, se non quanto Tribulando ad te clamavi. In te Domine speravi.

English translation In Thee O Lord did I hope To find pity for ever. But in a sad and dark hell I was, and suffered in vain. Broken and thrown to the wind is all hope. I have seen heaven turn me to weeping. Only sighs and tears remain To me of my sad, strong hope. I was wounded, but in my sorrow I called upon Thee. In Thee O Lord did I hope.

German translation In Dich, Herr, habe ich meine Hoffnung gesetzt, um ewiges Erbarmen zu finden. Doch in einer traurigen und dunklen Hölle befand ich mich und habe mich vergebens bemüht. Zermartert und jede Hoffnung verweht, sehe ich den Himmel mir gegenüber sich in Weinen verkehren. Mir bleibt von meiner traurigen großen Hoffnung nur übrig, seufzend Tränen zu vergießen. Ich bin verwundet worden, bis ich in Nöten zu Dir gerufen habe. In Dich, Herr, habe ich meine Hoffnung gesetzt.
