The sun has gone down to his rest,
The fisherman back to his home;
The rough rocks are hoary with spray,
The shingles are fringed with foam;
The love-star of eve is on high,
It glimmers beneath in the sea;
Enamoured I gaze, but am sad
Because I am absent from thee!

The robin has finished his song,
His last little song for the day;
The fields are deserted and lone,
The roads are as lonely as they.
But I, still remaining without,
My thoughts all unfettered and free
Go back to the joys of the time,
When I was not absent from thee!

But now I must hie to my home,
I am chilly and wet with the dew,
Yet night, with its curtain of clouds
Shall not hide thine image from view.
At the gate of my dreams we will meet,
Bright, happy and loving we’ll be:
For the time I’ll wholly forget,
That I am still absent from thee!
