Biography
William Thomas Giffe was born in Portland, Indiana, and grew up in College Corners, Indiana. After serving in the Army during the Civil War, he studied law at Liver College. He took lessons in the college singing school and sang in the glee club. After college, he studied at various normal schools with many of the important music teachers of the time including George F. Root, Luther O. Emerson, Horatio R. Palmer, and Henry S. Perkins. He became very successful as a chorus director and convention conductor. He was also supervisor of music in the public schools in Portland, Indiana. He wrote or compiled several books for singing schools. At first, they were published by Oliver Ditson, but he publishing them himself when he established the Home Music Company in Logansport, Indiana. He was one of three men selected to deliver an address in Logansport at the memorial services for assassinated president William McKinley. He died in Seattle, Washington. He wrote many hymns, gospel songs and songs for use in churches, Sunday schools, singing schools and music conventions.
