Title
This is a modern composition in English ("Faithful Cross") but now the title is in Latin only. Isn't this strange (to say the least)? If we want the title to indicate the original source of text, then perhaps a better solution would be "Faithful Cross (Crux fidelis) (Kathryn Rose)". Otherwise someone searching for this work in its original title will not be able to find it. What do others think? —Carlos 13:04, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- Composers may title their works however they wish (cf. Ex Ore Innocentium by John Ireland, the lyrics of which are in English). Based on the PDF score, this work is titled Crux fidelis so I think we should retain that title. --Bobnotts talk 14:47, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- Oops sorry, your're right, I didn't notice the title was in Latin inside the PDF. But in this specific case, the composer herself chose to include the English translation to the title when she created the page; I don't think we should change it unless asked for. (right now, I can't think of any established CPDL naming convention that disallows the use of two languages in the title, correct me if I'm wrong.) —Carlos 17:02, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- This reminds me of just how often we see "Magnificat" for the title of a work which begins "My soul doth magnify the Lord" – and similarly for many other originally Latin rite texts that get set in the vernacular. – Chucktalk Giffen♫ 17:44, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- On the contrary, Carlos, the composer no doubt used the English title as well as the Latin one in order to indicate the text of the work for users or provide an in-title translation for users who don't know what "Crux fidelis" means. We observe no such convention here at ChoralWiki. If we did, we would rename every "Magnificat" to "Magnificat (My soul doth magnify)" (thanks for the example, Chuck). The convention we do observe is that score pages should generally be titled with the title of the work followed by the composer's name in parentheses; additional information such as genre, voicing etc. should only be used for disambiguation. --Bobnotts talk 18:39, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
- Ok then, if you both agree on this I won't object. —Carlos 07:36, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
