Edition notes: Transcribed from 1580 print. Original key (chiavi naturali) and note values. Canto has the start of the madrigal as "Occhi cagion ch'ardendo i mi CONSUME" which rhymes with the other lines of the sonnet. The other 4 voices have the grammatically correct "i mi CONSUMO". We have opted for this latter reading.

Occhi cagion ch'ardendo i mi consume
Di gelosia di dubbio e di dispetto,
Per qual vostra durezza o mio difetto
Mi nascondete il vostro chiaro lume?

Vincer dovrebbe omai l'empio costume
Il tramortito e variato aspetto
Vendendo che di pianto e di sospetto
Traete ognor dai miei sì largo fiume

Occhi del viver mio scudo e sostegno
Sforzando il velo è la mia stella avversa
Sarò giamai di vostra grazia degno

E l'alma da sé fatta sì diversa
Vedrà mai più la man che per mio sdegno
