Biography
James R. Dye was born at De Ruyter, New York, and received his musical education in New York. He moved to Wisconsin and then settled in Nemaha City, Nebraska, where he lived for forty-five years. He opened a business of merchandising musical instruments supplying organs to churches, melodeons and piano-fortes to residents, drums and horns to country bands, and fiddles to country dance musicians. He was an accomplished musician and organized and directed the Dye family band, noted for their musical culture and appearances at social, political or patriotic gatherings throughout southeastern Nebraska. He retired to California where he built a home in San Diego known as the “Dye Villa.” It was considered a temple of gracious hospitality with arboreal decorations, flowers and an aviary with a collection of singing birds. He died in San Diego.
