German text Im Land zu Wittenberg so gut im Herbst mon trauben schneiden thut, den Wein thut man auspressen. Da was ein Esel hoch von mut, der suff sich vol vom weine gut und hielt sich gar vermessen. Da das der Herr des Weins ersach, beim Richter führt er große klag, woll haben zalt sein Weine. Der Richter fragt ohn als Gefehr: ob auch der Esel gsessen wer? Der ander sprach: „Herr, neine!“ Der Richter lacht und sprach: Mein Mann, der Esel dir nichts zalen kann, das kanstu selbst ermessen, dann sein Herr gibt ihm gar kein lohn, so hat er nur ein ehrtrunck thon, dieweil er nit ist gsessen.

English translation In the land of Württemberg the grapes are cut in autumn, wine is pressed out of them. There was a donkey, very bold, who drank lots of the good wine and beaved very inslolently. When the owner of the wine saw this, he complained before the judge and would have been paid his wine. The judge asked quite guilelessly whether the donkey had been sitting? The other one said: No, sir! The judge laughed and said: My man, the donkey cannot pay you, as you can easily understand yourself, for his master doesn’t pay him, hence he has only had a honorary drink, since he has not been sitting.
