Biography
William Edmondstoune Duncan was born in Sale, Cheshire, England. He showed considerable talent early, receiving the Associateship Diploma from the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) at age sixteen. He won a composition scholarship at the Royal College of Music and studied with Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford. After his time at the RCM, he studied with George A. Macfarren. He was chiefly occupied as a composer but also held a professorship at the Oldham College of Music. He was also active as a newspaper music critic. Among his published books were Key to Melodies and how to harmonize them, The story of minstrelsy, and The story of the carol. His compositions are quite extensive including orchestral works, choral works, songs, organ pieces.
