Come t‘haggio lasciat‘o vita mia,
Se gl‘occhi belli erano quelli,
che mi dan la vita, meschino me.

Ahimè, ch‘io non pensava di partirme,
Crudel fortuna, perché contraria
Mi sei stata sempre, meschino me.

Se la speranza non mi mantenese,
Di tornar presto con le mie mane
Mi daria la morte, meschino me.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt

How could I have left you, o my life,
while the beautiful eyes were those
that gave me life, wretched me.

Alas, I didn’t think of leaving,
cruel fortune, why have you been
always contrary to me, wretched me.

If hope wouldn’t sustain me,
to return quickly to my manes
I would have taken my life, wretched me.
