General Information

Title: Become ye righteous
Composer: Maggie Furtak
Lyricist: Maggie Furtak

Number of voices: 1v   Voicing: A
Genre: SacredAnthem

Language: English
Instruments: Piano

First published: 2015
Description: Mezzo solo with piano accompaniment based on a theme by Danish Ali. (Thanks, Danish! Hope you'll enjoy this!) The text is adapted from verse 2:18 to 2:21 from the Qur'an. A nice singable tune, with the piano supporting the singer throughout. Muslim services do not generally include music, but the Qur'an, like the Old Testament, credits David as writing the psalms with divine inspiration. Music is not forbidden, it's just not an integral part of the service as it is in the Christian tradition. I hope that this piece will encourage a few people of other faiths to discover the beautiful and inspirational writing of the Muslim faith. Read in the original Arabic, the poetry of the Qur'an is said to be so wonderful that it could not possibly be written by the hand of man. Peace be with you.

Worship your Lord,
who made you, and all who came before you,
and become ye righteous.
Your heart all wrapped in unbelief,
and your fingers in your ears,
the storm fills your soul with dread of death,
yet lightning lights your way, that you may walk therein.
Become ye righteous.
