William Alexander Campbell Cruickshank was born in Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland. His father was a physician and Deputy General Inspector of Hospitals. He was educated at Epsom College, studied privately with Thomas Hewlett, and graduated from Oxford 1885.
