William Augustine Ogden was born in Franklin County, Ohio. At age 8, his family moved to Indiana. He was educated in Indiana district schools and studied music at the community singing schools. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry where he organized a male voice choir. The choir became well known in the Army of the Cumberland. After the war, he studied music under Lowell Mason, Thomas Hastings, E. E. Bailey, and B. F. Baker. He gained great distinction as teacher and convention conductor.
