Description: The first known publication of the melody for this lullaby dates back to 1818, and harkens back to other, older folk-songs, sung to the same melody but with different lyrics. The best known among these is the earlier folk-song "So viel Stern am Himmel stehen" (loosely translated as "So Many Stars Light the Heavens"). That song was presumably the basis upon which the pastor, children's story writer and poet, Wilhelm Hey, wrote the children's song most often associated with this melody,"Weißt du, wie viel Sterne (Sternlein) stehen".

1 Weißt du, wie viel Sterne stehen
An dem blauen Himmelszelt?
Weißt du, wie viel Wolken gehen
Weithin über alle Welt?
Gott, der Herr, hat sie gezählet,
Dass ihm auch nicht eines fehlet
An der ganzen großen Zahl,
An der ganzen großen Zahl.

2 Weißt du, wie viel Mücklein spielen
In der heißen Sonnenglut?
Wie viel Fischlein auch sich kühlen
In der hellen Wasserflut?
Gott, der Herr, rief sie mit Namen,
Dass sie all ins Leben kamen,
Dass sie nun so fröhlich sind,
Dass sie nun so fröhlich sind.

3 Weißt du, wie viel Kinder frühe
Stehn aus ihrem Bettlein auf,
Dass sie ohne Sorg und Mühe
Fröhlich sind im Tageslauf?
Gott im Himmel hat an allen
Seine Lust, sein Wohlgefallen,
Kennt auch dich und hat dich lieb,
Kennt auch dich und hat dich lieb.
