Viva, viva, Bacco
Che di vin ha colm'il facco
ne di ber' alcun’ sia stracco,
Viva Bacco, Bacco.

Corra la tazz’intorno,
né facc' a Bacco scorno,
e liet’havran’ il giorno.

Vada l'Arno al tireno,
e a noi venga Sileno,
e beva un vaso pieno.

Voi che versat'i pianti,
O ben acces'amanti,
Il vin da risi’e canti.

Col vin bagnate l'ali
d’amor, gl'archi e gli strali,
che fuggirann'i mali,

E voi che v’attristate
del caldo della state,
questa tazza votate.

Ceda pur l'acqua fresca
e’ogni nobil esca
Al ber della tedesca1.

Sprezzat'ogn'altro frutto,
bagnat'il labbro asciutto
e bevete lo tutto.

Per cha questo dulcissimo liquore
da virtù Bacco d’allegran' il core.

German.png German translation

Es lebe Bacchus,
der mit Wein den Schlauch gefüllt hat,
davon zu trinken niemand müde sei,
es lebe Bacchus, Bacchus.

Der Krug gehe im Kreis herum,
tut Bacchus keinen Schimpf an,
und fröhlich wollen wir diesen Tag haben.

Es fließe der Arno zum Tyrrhenischen Meer,
und zu uns komme Silen
und trinke ein volles Gefäß.

Ihr, die ihr Tränen vergießt
oder feurige Liebhaber seid,
der Wein erzeugt Lachen und Gesang.

Mit Wein badet die Flügel
Amors, die Bögen und die Pfeile,
damit die Übel entfliehen.

Und ihr, die ihr euch betrübt
über die Hitze des Sommers,
wählt diesen Krug.

Das frische Wasser soll weichen,
und alles Edle entspringe
beim Saufen (nach deutscher Art).

Verachtet jede andere Frucht,
badet die trockene Lippe
und trinkt alles aus.

Denn dieses süße Getränk
gibt Bacchus Kraft, das Herz zu erfreuen.

English.png English translation

Long live Bacchus,
who has filled the wineskin with wine,
whereof to drink no one be weary,
Long live Bacchus, Bacchus.

Let the jug go round,
don’t scorn Bacchus,
and we will have a joyful day.

The Arno shall flow to the Tyrrhenian Sea,
and to us Silenus shall come
and drink a full vessel.

You that shed tears,
or are fervent lovers:
the wine will give you laughter and song.

Lave the wings of Amor with wine,
the bows and the arrows,
so that the evil will flee.

And you that are grieving
about the heat of the summer,
choose this cup.

Fresh water shall give way,
and everything noble shall springe
from hard drinking (the German way).

Despise every other fruit,
bathe the dry lip,
and drink it all.

For this sweet drink
bestows power on Bacchus to delight the heart.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt
1. bere alla tedesca: heavy drinking (which Italians also
practiced during the Oktoberfest in Munich); the phrase
is still used in the 2010s.
