Magistern:
Svara mig, Glunten, på ära och tro,
utan avseende på små fataliteter,
sådana, vet du ju, bygga och bo,
varthelst du kommer, inom alla fakulteter,
är inte Uppsala märkvärdigt bra,
bättre än alla andra städer här i Norden?
Jag vågar till och med påstå — jaha!
bättre än någon annan fläck på hela jorden?

Glunten:
bäst utav allt, som finns på denna sidan solen;

Glunten:
Ja, ser du, kära bror,
regeln är för stor,
att den ej skulle någon jämkning kunna tåla;

Translation by Mick Swithinbank Uppsala is best
The song - one of a cycle of 30 - is presented as a dialogue between two students at Uppsala University in the mid-19th century.

Magistern:
Tell me, Glunten, in all honesty,
disregarding minor mishaps
of the kind which, as you know, occur
no matter where you go, in every faculty,
is not Uppsala remarkably fine,
better than any other town here in the North?
I would even make so bold as to insist
that it excels all other places in the whole wide world; don't you agree?

Glunten:
Spoken like a horse*: Uppsala is best,
best of all this side of the sun;
and may the devil take me if it has its equal:
you would search in vain to find one from the equator to the pole.

Both (refrain):
No! There is nowhere else in the whole wide world
where you can live around the clock
without risk and constantly behave
like a Turk, yet still be regarded as a normal person.
And if there is such a place, it is on another planet,
whose name not even Bredman** knows.

Magistern:
Yes, you are right - no two ways about it -
and I and many others agree with you,
but there are others who do not as readily
appreciate our dear Uppsala's excellence.
Some boast of their Göteborg,
others would rather run to and fro in Stockholm,
some think with regret of Karlstad,
others of pears and apples down in Gränna.

Glunten:
Yes, you see, dear brother,
the maxim is too absolute
ever to tolerate any modification;
but is it the sun's fault
if its golden rays
are never admired by the mole in his hole?

Both: (repeat refrain)

(*) Comparison apparently necessitated by constraints of rhyme - not a Swedish idiom.
(**) Reference to Johan Bredman, professor of astronomy and subsequently rector at Uppsala University, d. 1841.
