English text
There went a rifleman forth the the field,
Farewell, farewell!
His courage to prove, and never to yield,
Farewell, farewell!
A maiden stood while morn did break,
A last fond look of the youth to take;
Once more he bids her farewell!
Her cheeks dried the tears as they fell,
The grief that she felt none can tell.
Farewell!
He's gone, and her eyes full of tears him behold
No more, no more!
She weeps, poor girl, and his heart, once bold,
Is sore, is sore!
And now he's over the dark blue sea,
Once more oh! may he return back to thee.
The parting of lovers gives pain;
Return, or all comfort is vain.
Farewell, farewell!
Trara, trara.
