John Arnold's book The Psalmist's Recreation was published in London in 1757: the title page is dated, and describes the work as 'CONTAINING Select Portions of the PSALMS, Properly adapted to A Set of PSALM-TUNES Entirely New. To which is added, An Excellent ANTHEM, Composed for Four Voices, with a Thorough Bass for the Organ or Bassoon &c. The imprint reads: 'LONDON: Printed by R. Brown, near Christ's-Hospital, for the Author, And Sold by C. Hitch and L. Hawes, and J. Buckland, in Paternoster-Row; J. Hodges, near London-Bridge; J. Johnson, in Cheapside; and by the Booksellers in Town and Country. 1757. [Price One Shilling.]'

Publication date and place: 1757 by R. Brown in London.

Description of contents

The work consists of ten psalm tunes, all with texts from the Old Version metrical psalms, and an anthem. While the book terms this 'An ANTHEM taken out of the 107th Psalm', the text is based on the BCP text of Psalm 106: the only material shared with Psalm 107 is the opening verse, which is common to both psalms.
