Description: Walter Kittredge, author and composer of this song, records that it was written at a time when he expected to go South to join the Union forces. He was rejected by the surgeon and could not go. Being a singer by profession, he decided to do his part by "singing for Uncle Sam." This song is one of the few that survived the American Civil War.
