Talk:Quanta invidia ti porto avara terra (Orlando di Lasso)

The title of this madrigal in the original 1566 Gardano edition is: Quanta invidia ti porto avara terra, i.e. the word "io" is missing, just as in all the parts. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians lists this madrigal without "io" in the title. I took the lyrics from an edition of Petrarca's Canzoniere which, however, had "io".

As far as the metrics of this sonnet is concerned, the presence or absence of "io" makes no difference, as "io" would be merged with the last syllable of "invidia" to form just one syllable. Italian - unlike English, French, German - does not mandatorily require the presence of a personal pronoun, since the conjugation of the verb (porto) clearly indicates that it is first person singular. So I'm not even sure that "io" was present in Petrarca's original.

Bottom line: I think this madrigal should have been left as it was, its title being: Quanta invidia ti porto avara terra. Imruska (talk) 10:07, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
