I've been speaking with my German publisher about the problems he's had with publishing Stainer's ''Crucifixion'' in German, as the lyricist lived well into the twentieth century. It's an odd law, as text is obviously far, far easier to transcribe than text, although not as easy to protect... Since he died in 1930, my understanding is that copyright on his works ran out in 2000. I guess this is true throughout the EU, not just in the UK. There is the addition complication of typographical copyright, but that only lasts for 25 years. Bethlehem Down
I'm about to do an edition of this piece, and am not quite sure why it is not in the Public Domain/copyright protected in the USA... It's certainly PD here in the UK, so I don't see why I shouldn't make it available here on CPDL (as the site is used by people other than Americans...). Any thoughts? If not, I'll post it shortly.
