Original text and translations

German.png German text

1. Steht auf, ihr lieben Kinderlein!
Der Morgenstern mit hellem Schein
läßt sich frei sehen wie ein Held,
und leuchtet durch die ganze Welt.

2. Sei uns willkommen, schöner Stern.
Du bringst uns Christum, unsern Herrn,
der unser lieber Heiland ist;
darum du hoch zu loben bist.

3. Sei uns willkommen, lieber Tag.
Vor dir die Nacht nicht bleiben mag;
leucht uns in unsre Herzen fein
mit deinem himmelischen Schein.

4. O Jesu Christ, wir warten dein;
dein heiliges Wort leucht uns so fein.
Am End' der Welt bleib nicht lang aus
und führ uns in dein's Vaters Haus.

5. Du bist die liebe Sonne klar.
Wer an dich glaubt, der ist führwahr
ein Kind der ewigen Seligkeit,
die deinen Christen ist bereit.

6. Wir danken dir, wir loben dich
hie zeitlich und dort ewiglich
für deine große Barmherzigkeit
von nun an bis in Ewigkeit.
(Erasmus Alber, 1500 – 1553)

English.png English translation

1. Arise, O dearest children mine,
the morning star in beauty shines!
Let it shine, a hero bright,
and all the world share in its light.

2. We welcome you, O comely star,
announcing Christ, our Light, from far,
who is our Savior and our King,
for which our praise to you we sing.

3. We welcome you, O daylight dear;
you make the dark night disappear;
enlighten us in heart and mind
with your most sweet and heav'nly shine.

4. O Jesus Christ, we wait for You;
Your holy Word brings light anew.
Be with us when the end shall come
and lead us to Your Father's home.

5. You are the sun, our only star.
Whoever truly shall believe,
becomes a child of blessedness,
a Christian now in holiness.

6. We give You thanks, we give You praise
eternally and all our days
for Your great mercy, which we see
both now and for eternity.
