Description: First published by John H. Hickok in his Sacred Harp, 1832, for two parts (Tenor-Bass). Arranged William Walker in Southern Harmony, 1835, p. 16, for three voices, notes in four-shape format. The tune is a folk hymn from the late eighteenth century (Jackson 1953a, No. 182). Revised by William Hauser in four parts in 1848, and William Walker for four parts in seven-shape format in 1867. Words of the first stanza are by an anonymous author; second through fourth stanzas and chorus by Reginald Heber, 1811.
