Biography

Samuel Metcalf was an American physician, professor of chemistry, and compiler and arranger of music. As a teenager in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1818, he taught music and compiled the book Kentucky Harmonist – the first tunebook compiled in Kentucky. Publication of this book enabled him to enter college, where he studied medicine. "He practiced medicine for a time in New Albany, Indiana, and then in Mississippi. He later served on the Transylvania faculty as professor of chemistry. In 1831 Metcalf settled in New York City. He traveled widely in this country and abroad and published a number of articles and books on scientific subjects" (Hatchett 1992).
