Biography
Samuel Metcalf was an American physician, professor of chemistry, and compiler and arranger of music. As a teenager in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1818, he taught music and compiled the book Kentucky Harmonist – the first tunebook compiled in Kentucky. Publication of this book enabled him to enter college, where he studied medicine. "He practiced medicine for a time in New Albany, Indiana, and then in Mississippi. He later served on the Transylvania faculty as professor of chemistry. In 1831 Metcalf settled in New York City.
