Description: In praise of Johann Schweikhard (1553 - 1626), then provost of the monastery St. Peter in Mainz (at the age of 23!). He was a member of a noble family from Kronberg (in the Taunus, a low mountain range northwest of Frankfurt) already helding high posts at the episcopal court in Mainz. He was to become archbishop of Mainz in 1604, which meant that he was also Elector and Arch Chancellor of the Empire; appallingly he was a stout witch-hunter. He studied at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome before he returned shortly before 1576, a fact which is alluded to in the text.
