He was a member of a noble family from Kronberg (in the Taunus, a low mountain range northwest of Frankfurt) already helding high posts at the episcopal court in Mainz. He was to become archbishop of Mainz in 1604, which meant that he was also Elector and Arch Chancellor of the Empire; apallingly he was a stout witch-hunter. He studied at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome before he returned shortly before 1576, a fact which is alluded to in the text.
